Post-Coachella: Where To Unwind In The Desert After The Festival

While Coachella may not be part of your normal everyday routine or work, it is far from a vacation. Fun? Sure, but relaxing, it is not. Racing stage to stage to catch Kacey Musgraves or Childish Gambino’s performances and making sure to accommodate time for the off-grounds action like #REVOLVEfestival and house parties will be prove to be exhausting as they will be fun.

To complete your Coachella weekend (and fully enjoy yourself), extend it. Spend a few extra days out in the desert purely to relax and nurse your festival hangover. For peace, quiet, low levels of stimulation, and recuperating, here’s where you should go:

If you don’t want to travel too far, Ace Hotel’s Palm Springs location is known as the Swim Club as the property is centered around their two salt water pools. There’s something distinctly relaxing about the poolside palm tree and mountain views that make this mid-century modern oasis fit for unwinding a few days following Kanye West’s Sunday Service or screaming “Thank U, Next” at the top of your lungs.

There’s unwinding, like you can do at the Ace, and then there’s unplugging. Thirty miles outside of Palm Springs, The Pioneertown Motel is situated about 10 minutes off Twentynine Palms Highway and directly next door to famed desert BBQ spot, Pappy & Harriets, the perfect spot for dinner, live music, and to walk 250 feet to your Pioneertown bed.

Arguably the most serene place to wake up in the west (there is wi-fi, but no TVs), the once 1940s movie set was flipped into a 19 room motel in 2014 and is set to expand what’s left of the old western town set into a restaurant and bar later this year.

Best. Pancakes. In. The. Desert. No, this is not a new trendy take on an old school diner, this is an old school diner. Turquoise leather swivel seats line the bar surrounded by big friendly booths, and it’s likely you’ll be having your hot coffee from one of the Christmastime mugs in the mix-match, eclectic collection of tableware. The unsuspecting, family friendly spot may not be the detox you’ll need after the festival, but the friendly service and unrivaled breakfast will feed the soul.

While there may be beauty among the sun kissed festival goers in the brightly colored gear among the house parties and brand activations, in the few days following the shows it’ll be nice to get back in touch with nature. Morongo Valley’s Cactus Mart is more than just a desert-based plant store. Showcasing the beauty that can grow and even thrive within the desert climate, the team there can answer any and all desert plant life questions (they also offer landscaping consultation and do weddings). You can even dig your own, which is ideal as it’s important to respect the wildlife of the area, but it is undeniably natural to want to figure out a way to take a part of it home with you.

This is the brunch spot that is Instagram worthy as it is tasty. Founded by spouses Claire Wadsworth and Nikki Hill after stumbling upon the available location during their Joshua Tree honeymoon, La Copine Kitchen serves seasonal, Southern California-sourced ingredients with an occasional down south or Mediterranean influence.
